The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are running the world’s largest clean technology innovation and entrepreneurship support programme in developing countries and economies in transition entitled, “Global Cleantech Innovation Program for SMEs and Start-ups”(GCIP). Currently, GCIP operates in Armenia, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey; although it is expected to expand as several countries have already expressed their desire to engage in the programme. Through a competition based accelerator, GCIP promotes the development of a strong innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in each of the participating countries linking SMEs and startups to global systems to leverage partnerships, markets and financing. The programme is implemented in collaboration with Cleantech Open as a technical partner and has so far supported over 600 start-ups, some of which are now running multi-million US$ enterprises thereby creating green industries and jobs and providing local and global environmental benefits.
An integral part of this programme is to build the capacity of local national institutions including government agencies focused on SME development, clean technology, innovation and entreprenership to create an ecosystem for cleantech. Furthermore, the programme reinforces and connects existing in-country initiatives on clean technology innovation by bringing together key stakeholders to find, fund and foster entrepreneurs and their innovative solutions addressing today’s most urgent energy, environment and economic challenges.
The GCIP has been running in several countries for more than 5 years and has recorded remarkable success stories. This special event will be organised to :
- showcase the achievements of the GCIP in participating countries,
- promote collaboration and networking amongst start-ups across GCIP countries, and
- discuss linkages to other forms of support and financing.
