REthinking Energy: Accelerating the global energy transformation

Falling costs, driven by innovation in technology and policy, is spurring renewable energy deployment and with it a myriad of socioeconomic benefits. Renewables now are the first-choice option for expanding, upgrading and modernising power systems around the world, and are playing a fundamental role in the world’s ongoing energy transformation. But, the world is never static, and with new challenges bound to rise, the key question is what should be done more to accelerate the energy transformation to support the renewed ambition of meeting the Paris Agreement, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 goals.

REthinking Energy, the flagship report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), provides thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing debate, and on the ongoing energy transformation. It examines trends and developments, and how renewable energy is being produced and used, for example in the rapid growth of solar PV, in game-changing storage innovation, in the success of fine-tuned policies and new financing mechanisms. Leaning primarily on IRENA’s own recent analytical work, the publication pivots its cases on selected topical and critical issues that play key strategic role in the transition.

The foundations for global energy transformation exist today. This third edition of REthinking Energy emphasises that accelerating the pace of the energy transition and expanding its scope beyond the power sector will not only reduce carbon emissions, it will improve lives, create jobs, achieve development goals, and ensure a cleaner and more prosperous future. The energy transition is underway, but it will need to accelerate through decisive action aimed at breaking through to higher shares of renewable energy in the power sector, an expansion of renewables in end-use sectors, and a rapid deployment of access solutions.
